Autumn Series
Gavin Bryars at 80
Gavin Bryars at 80 String Works is a retrospective series of concerts and events across the UK, exploring the music of Gavin Bryars.
The series focuses on Bryars’ works for string quartets, re-imagining iconic works such as The Sinking of the Titanic and giving the London premiere of his fourth String quartet written in 2021.

Yorkshire-born Bryars occupies a singular place in British Contemporary music, responsible for the ‘closest thing we have in this country for an alternative national anthem’ in his seminal work Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1969).
He has collaborated with the likes of Tom Waits, Brian Eno, and Aphex Twin and he continues to be prolific as he celebrates his 80th year.

New music
We have also commissioned works by a younger generation of composers who embody the experimental ethos, the humour, and eclecticism of Bryars’ work.
We are excited to have Mercury nominated, acclaimed jazz trumpeter Laura Jurd, and the Ivor Award-winning composer Leo Chadburn create new commissions for the series. Laura will be performing with us in Cardiff, London & Leeds.
