Our debut release on Cantaloupe Music, Realms, is the culmination of a five-year transatlantic collaboration with Meredith Monk. Developed through a close working relationship with Meredith, the album grew from a shared process of exploring and reshaping this remarkable music together.
Bringing together Stringsongs, Backlight and Realm Variations, the album places Meredith’s instrumental writing at its heart, exploring the shifting relationship between instruments and voices.
The title Realms reflects a thread running through the three works: the natural world, the human and the celestial. Together, they connect with Meredith’s lifelong Buddhist practice and her belief in music as a way of awakening us to the present moment.
About Meredith Monk
Meredith is an internationally celebrated composer, singer and interdisciplinary artist whose work has transformed contemporary music over the past six decades.
A pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, she has also created acclaimed works for string quartet, chamber ensemble and orchestra. Her music has been commissioned and performed by leading artists and institutions worldwide, and she has received numerous honours, including a MacArthur Fellowship, the US National Medal of Arts and the Golden Lion for Music from the Venice Biennale.
